Surbiton R1: Andy Murray vs Hyeon Chung

Quote

27 year old Chung, who took up tennis as a way to try to help maintain his eyesight, was tipped to be the next Asian tennis sensation after achieving a series of milestones at a young age, including winning the 2017 Next Gen Finals and reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 Australian Open becoming the first and only player from his country to do so.  At his best, he has been ranked as high as 19th in the world before injuries resulted in him falling down the standings and eventually being forced to take time away from the sport.

After two years of absence from the ATP tour due to a troublesome back injury he came back to play doubles with compatriot Soon-woo Kwon at the Korea Open in September last year, losing in the 2nd round.  For his singles return he accepted a wildcard into the draw at the 2023 Seoul Challenger in April and in his first match lost to Jordan Thompson in straight sets.  He next played at the Busan Open in Korea losing in three to Yasutaka Uchiyama.  He competes using his Protected Ranking.

The match is third on Centre Court today at an estimated time of 2:30 pm BST

For those in the UK who can't watch it on the BBC streams at the time, Challenger TV does replays for up to 24 hours.

This match looks a potential problem for Andy if he starts slowly as he often does. Chung was, once, a good player. If Andy negotiates this opener he has the chance to get to the final. I shall try to watch his games next week. He needs to take this chance to boost his confidence in general and in particular on grass.

I must admit I thought Chung had retired so was surprised to see his name in the draw!

I think Andy's problem initially could be that as Chung has only played two singles matches since his return he can get little idea what his current style of play is, and I do know that he's modified his game, his serve in particular, to accommodate his back problems.

Another excellent service game and Andy takes the set 6-3.

Chung is fighting though so Andy needs to keep the pressure on.
