I'm going to be extremely ignorant here and ask if someone could explain to me the difference between race and entry rankings - how they're worked out etc.

Someone correct me if I am wrong here but I think 'Race' is the ranking based on your current year and 'Entry' as your overall long term stats. But they do carry more meaning than that though.

The race ranking is in effect your position in a calendar year. The entry ranking is your position over the preceding twelve months. So at the end of August your race position only reflects eight months while your entry ranking goes back to Sept. 2004.

The Entry rankings are for the previous 52 weeks, so someone like Tim, who got to the semis of the US Open last year, will drop several places if he contiunues his abysmal run as he has loads of points to defend. Conversly, Rusedski only needs a couple of wins to leap into the top 20.

Challengers and Quallies dont count towards the Race, as it's purely based on ATP main events as shown HERE but Challengers do count towards Entry rankings. Hence Andy's stellar progress this summer. Smile

Hi all,

Just to continue the rankings discussion, as you know the most important for Andy (at this stage) is the ATP Entry System - being the rolling 52-week total of ranking points.  Andy is currently ranked 122 in the world using this system.

In qualifying for the US Open, Andy received 15 additional points.  This would see his ranking rise just 3 places from 122 to 119

Note that this assumes that all players above him remain on the same number of points - of course this will never happen exactly as some of these players will drop points and some will gain points over the course of the US Open.  For example, Tim Henman will lose a ot of points at the end of this tournament, as he got to the semi-final last year, but got knowcked out in the first round this year.  Andy has no points to defend, as he did not take part in the US Open last year.

In winning his first round match at the US Open, Andy has received 35 ranking points (+ the 15 he got for qualifying).  This should move him up to about 108 in the world.

If he can win his next match (against Frenchman Arnaud Clement), he would get a total of 95 ATP Ranking Points, which should see him inside the top 100 at 92.  Incedently, Clement is currently ranked at 91 in the ATP Entry System.

Winning his third round match would see him get a total of 165 points (150 + 1 for qualifying).  This should see Andy's ranking go to approximately 70 in the world.  Any further than this in the US Open would probably have to see Andy beating Roger Federer in the Fouth Round, so I won't go there...... although winning the US Open would leave him pushing the top 16!  Maybe in a couple of year's time.....

I like watching tennis but don't know much about rankings etc. can anyone tell me if a win for Andy at the Davis Cup event will put him up the rankings.  Excuse the ignorance.

No. The Davis Cup is a completely different thing from the ATP tournaments. It's a bit like the Olympics, you play for the honour of representing your country.

ATP Tournaments are the only ones that count towards Race Points. (Challengers and Futures are not included in this, but Challengers DO count towards the all important Entry Rankings)-the one the players are interested in. Hence Andy's great leap up the rankings this summer.
