Sounds a typical Andy first round win with a struggle to get going but the determination still in place. Sadly did not watch it.

Next game he wins at ATP level he will get back to about 500 in the rankings. It may not be here in Washington but perhaps Cinncinnatti?  No need for worries I think. No doubt we will get feedback by tonight.

I notice also that he has risen to 13th in the British rankings (almost ten places) and another win will be him back into top ten!  I know that his rise up the ranking will suddenly slow as he will probably need to get to a couple of third round wins to achieve top 250. Would like him to do one against Edmund as that would be such a huge mental boost for him.  However one step at a time is OK too.

Edmund should be at his peak being a top 20 player, so right now it's a big ask for Andy to beat him. However, if he did win it would be enormous and where would that leave Edmund??

^ I too think it unlikely that Andy will come through against Kyle. If it had been over five sets then despite his lack of play then I would have gone for Andy. Over three with Kyle being a good  starter whose game seems to collapse if pressured he does tend to win the first then struggle if a match is more in the balance. If Andy has a good second set then..... it is possible.

Kyle should not get concerned if he loses. Andy has all the skills of a top twenty player still so not a walkover.  I gather he has been unwell too?

^  Kyle had a throat infection (a virus) and withdrew from his last tournament, but I think he's all right now.

Very happy for Andy I knew he would have a hard struggle but he did well. Glad he did not play another match, too little rest between matches

Glad he decided not to go to Canada. Too much all at once.

Agree with all that.  When I heard him talk recently about doing a lot of tennis these next few month's I think he thought that  his recovery was only related to physical fitness and if he did a lot then he would come through in a superb  condition at the end.

It just ain't like that. The biggest issue is mental fitness and that is in many forms from competitive edge to motivation and body management.

I am looking forward to Cincinnati now.  Another three rounds would be good.  Also help get him closer to a more appropriate ranking.
