According to the commentators on Amazon Prime today, Andy has not applied for Protected Ranking and will be relying on WCs the rest of the season.
What tournament would refuse him anyway?

And very smart, I think. It means he'll be coming up against all kinds of players, not necessarily superstars, and hopefully getting plenty of matchplay, which is what he needs.
That all sounds very sensible to me.

Well, we knew it was coming, but depressing reading nonetheless. Andy drops to 839. Onwards and upwards!

Honestly, when you read the names of the Brits who are now above him it's actually rather hilarious.

It might not turn out as bad as it sounds because at that level there's very frequently only one point of difference between the players, so in theory he could start to go back up the rankings very quickly, which is what happened with Del Potro when he returned from his second lot of wrist surgery, although having said that getting back even into the top 20 could still take quite a while.

Thanks for sharing a more positive outlook Aileen. Last week Andy did say he already felt more comfortable since moving from grass to the hard courts. It’s still a case of wait and see as to how long it takes him to move up the rankings.

Well as he's hardly played for over a year it isn't particularly surprising that his ranking has dropped. Andy will understand and know the position, he won't be worrying about his ranking.
& yes there are other British players ahead of him now, but Kyle's a good player and Andy is proud of his achievements.
& as Aileen has said, once Andy starts playing more consecutively, his ranking will soon improve.

As Andy will still be playing top level tournaments, either due to his protected ranking or being given wildcards he’ll be able to earn more points from one or two wins a tournament than those around him in the rankings can from winning the tournaments they are able to play in.
As long as he can play, he'll quickly move up.

^ That is true. I think that winning just two games in Washington would get him into the top 500?
It will be his luck of course to get the best players or be in the wrong part of the draw!
Do we know more about whether he plans to use protected ranking options or rely on wildcards?

^ As far as I know Andy intends to rely solely on wild cards, He must have his reasons for this but just what these reasons are I don't know.
Nor can I be bothered to go work out from Andy's current ranking where he might end up depending on how far he gets in Washington, but what I will say is that it didn't take Del Potro too long to jump up the rankings after his return from his second wrist surgery, but considerably longer to get to where he is now, i.e. world #5, although I don't want to start a war of comparison between the two! I just hope that in Washington the tennis gods will be a little kinder to Andy than they have been so far.

He needs 1000 points to be top 50. So it depends how long it takes for his movement and stamina to come together to win 6 games in 7 days. Eastbourne showed that his shot making is already there.

Thank you for that calculation circe. Andy's biggest hurdle though, as we all know, is learning to trust his hip again, and nobody, probably including himself, can predict how long that will take.
He's now practising at the NTC where he was seen hitting with Jack Sock.

Bless Andy's sense of humour! Although on second thoughts, maybe he is proud to be there given that there must have been times when he wondered if he would ever get back to competing at all.

I didn’t think of that. His way of saying he’s not finished yet.
