Progress in the US Open

Quote

Great result in the first round.  Andy would have lost this match just a few months ago, but has proved so many people wrong with the obvious work he has done on his fitness and strength.  To come back from 2-1 down against a player (Andrei Pavel) well above him both in terms of experience and ranking is a real achievement.

Andy must have a good chance against a fellow-qualifier in the next round, Arnauld Clement.  But please, no pressure on the lad - just to get where he has so quickly is an achievement in itself.

Good luck for your next match!

I agree. He's come on leaps and bounds since Wimbledon and Clement isn't the same player who reached the Aussie Open Final a few years ago. He's beatable.

:?  Although being sick on court was not his finest hour. I pity the poor sod who had to clean it up.

Next time he wont guzzle his energy drink like he was competing to see who could down the fastest pint!  Shock

Fabulous match. I'm building up quite a store of DVD's of his games Smile

Easily the greatest tennis match i have seen for a few years, since Henman - Ivanesavic, and murray was even better than that Shock  Shock . Thought he had lost it in the beginning of fourth set but then he came back and destroyed Pavel Very Happy . Feared the worst when he threw up and can't remember seeing anyone miss six first serves in a row whilst serving for the match Crying or Very sad . Pavel was getting a bit pissed off at the end though. lol

I have to say i was extremely impressed by Andy Murrays display in his senior U.S. Open debut against Pavel, especially his ability to hit cross court winners, ive been following andy's progress since i saw him in Wimbledon and every time i watch him i get a great sense of pride in a fellow scot doing so well considering he is only 18 Shock . Now im looking forward to andys encounter with a fellow qualifier in Arnaud Clement, as Andy didnt drop a set coming through qualification in 3 rounds so a win through to the 3rd round is a real possibility. But no matter what happens i think Andy has proved that given time and support he will be British no.1, well done Andy and good luck Very Happy

Hehe, hi guys, I had to close down the US Open scorecard at 3-0 in the fourth, cos the wife was desperate to get some kip. It's so encouraging to see Andy win a five-setter.

Clement is certainly beatable (he dropped a couple of sets during quals), but Andy's achieved so much already. The 50 ranking points he's netted thus far could put him aroun 105! But a win would deffo put in the 90s. Awesome progress.

That's the sort of attitude we want from a British player. I'm sure he'd die on court if necessary!

Incidentally, the swearing by Pavel was worthy of more than just a points deduction. It should have been at least a game.

Very Happy  Great news that he doesn't play his next match until Friday.

That extra day will make all the difference to his recovery from a very draining match.

GOOOOOOOOOO ANDY!!

Fantasic to stay up and watch Andy go through.. despite the fact I had to be up for work at 6am!  Does anyone have an opinion on why Andy continued to drink so much water etc after throwing up? the TV commentator quite rightly said a much!! ... Surely Petch has advised him on fluid intake?? I guess the cause of the sick incident was too much energy drinking during the game?   still it was absolutely fantastic to see him through to meet Clement and great to see him get through a tough 5 setter!! well done Andy.. your a star!
