French Open R1: Andy Murray vs Stan Wawrinka

Pretty much as I expected.  Stan's had a lousy season then comes to RG firing on all cylinders.  Will be interesting to see how far he gets.

I don't think O'Maras constant come on Andy's are helping much
I don't think he's new Yonex racquet is helping much either.  Should have stayed with Head.

Stan speaking to Eurosport: "My first words were respect for a great champion. I have loved watching him [Andy Murray] play, loved fighting against him. We've had a lot of fights over the last 15 years. We are not very young so we did all we could and remember all these moments.

"I love to work in front of a crowd like this. I've shared a lot of emotion with this crowd and they gave me a lot of energy to fight. In my head I'm still a young guy, still a kid."

I did not have high expectations that Andy would win. When Stan is on, he can blast you off the court and his BH, his signature shot, did a lot of damage tonight. Over two sets Andy could keep it competitive, in the third his belief in a win may have faded against an experienced clay-courter like Stan.

Some facts from BBC Sport -

"With a combined age of 76, this was the second oldest match-up in Roland Garros history.  The first? Ivo Karlovic, 40, against 37-year-old Feliciano Lopez in the 2019 first round."

From Andy -

"Disappointed. I knew it was gonna be a tough match. Stan played brilliant tennis over the years on that court and I think he did that today. Gave me very little opportunities. Would have like to have done better but my expectations weren’t high."

Rafa goes out straight sets and they interview him. Why did they not interview Andy?

Hi Apollo,

In an interview before the match amelie mauresmo said that Andy had said he didn’t want an interview or any sort of send off if he lost.  I got the idea that he’d been pretty emphatic about it.

Okay thanks, I can understand that, good to know that they wanted to interview him.
