French Open R1: Andy Murray vs Stan Wawrinka

Quote

In what will be the 23rd main tour meeting between the two players, Andy, currently ranked 75 in the world. will take on the 39 year old Swiss, who currently sits at No. 98.  This tie is a repeat of their 2020 first-round meeting, which was won convincingly by Wawrinka in straight sets.  Wawrinka won the title here in 2015, and was a runner-up in 2017.  Andy leads their H2H 13-9 but has only defeated Wawrinka once on clay, and that was in the semi-finals at RG in 2016, with Andy winning in four sets.  Remarkably, this will be the third time in a row that Andy has played Wawrinka here, Wawrinka's brutal five-setter 2017 win exacerbating Andy’s existing hip problem, and his only match in Paris since was that one-sided loss in September 2020.  The last time they played was in Bordeaux last year with Wawrinka winning 6-3, 6-0.

Wawrinka hasn't enjoyed the best of seasons so far.  After a dismal start which saw him win only two matches out of the nine played, he skipped Madrid and Rome in order to play Challengers but still didn't show much positive form.  He's struggled to find consistency and his serve has generally been below par.  Wawrinka though is more than capable of raising his game when he really has to, and clay is his favourite surface, with his serve and backhand being his best shots.  Andy on the other hand says he's feeling 'motivated' after all the hard work he put in while recovering from his ankle injury.

Go Andy! I'm glad he's playing a pretty great guy, even if he has beaten him a lot on clay!

Waiting for match, delayed an hour and half due to rain. Commentators saying Andy is not as fast as Stan due to his surgeries, but Stan has had knee surgeries. So may the force be with Andy.
So here we go.
