Andy in Dubai

Quote

Withdraws

Andy, who lifted the title here in 2017 beating Fernando Verdasco in straight sets despite almost losing in the quarter-finals to Philipp Kohlschreiber where he had to save seven match points, played here last year, defeating Christopher O'Connell in the first round in three then losing to Jannik Sinner in straights in the next.

The draw doesn't get any easier though as he'll play the 5th seed Hubert Hurkacz in round 1.  The 2nd round shouldn't be quite as tricky if he gets there, but there's the prospect of Djokovic in the quarter-finals.

Dubai is GMT+4

^ Thank you Aileen for opening this topic.

Andy has now been reported as saying that he might not play in Dubai if he has to face Hurkacz in round 1 because he feels he needs to be “smarter” to ensure his body is not pushed to breaking point -

Does anyone know if he has to defend many points in Dubai?

Can we hope for Hubi to withdraw?

As Hurkacz won his final I should imagine he may well be on a high for more tennis?

I've just come across this article in which Andy states he'd now like to get 800 wins under his belt

This is a strange article. Murray makes no reference to his hip and says he's just being cautious. Maybe they were referring to his historical hip injuries. Bad reporting if that's the case...?

I wondered that too because it's been a long time since he's mentioned anything to do with his hip, and also his movement round the court in the Doha final seemed perfectly ok.

Understandable decision from Andy. He had a nearly perfect week and has to manage his body carefully. As long as he plans to play in IW, I assume he is physically ok.

So finally we get the truth about the withdrawal, and it's nothing to do with his hip -

"... on Friday evening in Doha I was feeling my abs a little bit after the semi-final.  Because of the experience I had last year [in Stuttgart], it was clearly a load-related thing because of the amount of tennis I played in a short period, so I was a bit worried about that.”

Andy just does not want to overdo it, no mention from him about hip injury .
