Andy at Wimbledon

Quote

While uncertainty still reigns about Andy's participation in what would be his last ever Wimbledon, according to the draw if he does decide he's fit enough to play singles, he'll meet Tomas Machac in round 1.

In the doubles, which seem a bit more likely, Andy and Jamie will play the Australian pairing of John Peers & Rinky Hijikata, and If they get past them, the prospect of the No. 9 seeds Neal Skupski & Michael Venus in round 2.

Seen practising for just over an hour at Wimbledon today with coaches Mark Hilton and Jonny O'Mara.

"Murray hit forehands from the baseline and practised his serving, but did little running as he builds up slowly  'It was alright, considering. Obviously I haven’t done much for the last week.  I need to be able to move properly, which I can’t yet, so let’s see in 48 hours or so'."

My understanding is that Andy's got until Tuesday lunchtime at the very latest to decide about the singles, the match being scheduled for 3rd on CC (the Lucky Loser taking his place would need time to prepare), and possibly Friday morning for the doubles.

Andy played another set today, indoors because of the rain.  Still doesn't have 100%  feeling and sensation in his leg.

“I'm going to play another set again tomorrow. I'm doing some physical testing in the morning to see sort of how far off I am from a physical perspective. Then I will probably make a decision tomorrow evening after that.

"I'm hoping with each day that passes that the likelihood of me being able to play will increase. I don't want to go on the court and it be awkward or not be able to be competitive.

"Obviously with doubles, although you're covering less distance and less court, you still need to be able to move pretty explosively."

Practised today against Kyle Edmund.  Was leading 6-3, 2-0 when the session ended.

!“It was good. I’m going to go and have a chat with my team now, speak to my family this evening and then make a decision. It’s getting better and the testing and stuff I’ve done has been good, I just need to decide whether it’s enough to compete.”

Andy was reported to be serving well and hitting some strong groundstrokes, but his movement remained compromised and he was struggling when pulled out wide.

If Andy does play, it's 3rd on CC following a ladies singles and Djokovic vs a Qualifier, so possibly around 6 pm.

He's pulled out of the singles but will play in the doubles.

Very sad but not really surprising given recent reports.  It's good though that he can still play in the doubles.  His place in the draw has gone to David Goffin as a lucky loser.

I don't want to sound pretentious, but this approaching end to Andy's professional tennis life is honestly feeling rather existential for me. I've followed his career to one degree or another for close to twenty years, and the trajectory and the successes and failures have coloured my whole view of the top level of the sport and indeed of all the other important players of his time. I realize that I've slowly been getting used to not tracking my experience of tournaments—especially the slams—based on Andy's pathway through them, but now that really isn't going to be there any more I am feeling kind of bereaved. It's going to be lonely on the tennis court without him.

I know what you mean.  I like watching some of the newer players but things just won’t be the same.

I can relate to that.  It doesn't help either that I've spent much of the last four years opening match threads (not always easy!), so there's going to be quite a gap in my life now.  I've also stopped watching as many matches as I used to because none of the newer players come even close. to what you might call 'the old guard' of players.
