Andy at Wimbledon

Quote

As World No. 39 Andy will not be seeded because the AELTC have gone back to their pre-2002 system whereby players are seeded according to their ranking and not by previous performances on grass.  This means that Carlos Alcaraz and not four-time defending champion Novak Djokovic will be the No. 1 seed for the men, with Iga Swiatek the No.1 for ladies.  Djokovic hasn't played competitively since collecting his men's record 23rd Grand Slam title at the French Open on 11 June and so slid to No.2, while Alcaraz rose one spot after winning the title at Queens.

Players from Russia and Belarus are being allowed to compete this year as neutral athletes, provided they sign a declaration stating that they do not support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.  They also must not receive funding “from the Russian and/or Belarusian states (including sponsorship from companies operated or controlled by the states) in relation to their participation in The Championships”.

The Championships will be played over 14 days, marking the second year that play on the middle Sunday is part of the intended schedule.

Andy has been drawn against wildcard fellow Brit Ryan Peniston, who is ranked 267th in the world.  The winner faces fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas or Dominic Thiem.

Very good draw tbh. I would back Murray against Tsitsipas in r2, and after that it's very achievable for him to go deep.

He did come very close to beating Tsitipas at the 2021 USO despite Tsitsi's toilet break shenanigans, then defeated him in straight sets in Stuttgart last year.  Neither he nor Thiem have been very comfortable on grass anyway.

Tsitsipas has looked very mediocre in his grass performance so far. For once a draw that doesn't look like a disaster!
