Rome R1: Andy Murray vs Fabio Fognini

Quote

Andy has quite rightly stated that FF played very, very well. I am not a tennis expert, yet from what I saw I would say it was not too bad a match on clay from Andy. I thought he would have beaten many other opponents yesterday.
Should he skip the rest of the clay court season, he cannot improve his ranking for Wimby, one of his short-term goals. But I am not able to judge how much preparation it takes for grass.
Being selfish, I would love to see him playing next week and in the FO.

^ Well said Counter puncher. I take a similar view. I do though think that the FO appearance is a 'now or never' situation and he has to balance how much he wants to be there against his very ambitious Wimbledon dreams. Corrected to give a correct name!

^ Apollo?  Anyway I agree with CP too because I rather fear that, at turned 36,. this will be the only chance Andy will ever get to play at RG.  I also think he's kidding himself a little if he thinks he can win Wimbledon again particularly if he's unseeded - but then, if we didn't have some ambitions in life we'd never get anywhere.  I just hope too that he and his team don't base their decision on this one match for all the reasons that have been stated

^ Thanks Aileen, I was trying to do too much at the same time!

He should certainly play next week. Winning the previous challenger bumped him up 20 places. He will be the 4th or 5th seed next week and a win would put him close to top 30.

^  That makes a lot of sense. He did say that he wanted to go to the FO just to experience that slam again, he played it less than others, so go first to Bordeaux and try to gain points and stick with the experience attitude for the FO. I worry that he cannot keep to a plan these days. Not usually a good influence on outcomes.

Andy will need to make up his mind at least about Bordeaux very soon because the draw takes place tomorrow.  His name is still on the player list but it hasn't been updated to show any changes.

Btw, FF has just won against Kecmanovic (No 30 and a decent clay-courter, if I‘m not wrong) in 2 sets, hitting 46 winners. That should put Andy‘s performance into perspective.

I watched the second set and thought Kecmanovic played very well.  In fact he was a bit unlucky losing the 2nd set TB after coming back from 6-3 down.

We know what Andy is like, I'm sure he will keep an eye on how far Fognini gets. He shouldn't be too disappointed with how he played as Fognini is great on clay.

Andy as we know is his own worst critic, so unless he has some physical issue I hope his team talk him into playing at least in Bordeaux in order to try and pick up more ranking points before Wimbledon, although now that the dust of this match has settled he might well be seeing things differently anyway.

The draw for Bordeaux is out and Andy is playing as the No. 2 seed.  No word yet about RG.
