It is insane. Having won two (?) singles matches on tour, he plays his best tennis today. What a shame for Andy, who plays a really good match. I cannot see him break FF unless something extraordinary happens.

Use your smarts Andy, find a way to break F!

Too bad but F could do no wrong no matter what Andy did.

Probably not surprising given how many matches he's played in the last few days.

Mid-second set I thought Andy had him on the ropes the way FF was playing. Then he must have thrown in an aspirin and the firepower was back. Shame! It was a little unlucky to have to play such a dangerous opponent on his home turf in front of family and friends.  And FF seized the opportunity and played lights-out tennis.
It is another R1 loss for Andy, yet this time he did not go without a fight.

Quite an extraordinary performance by Fognini given that he hasn't played for weeks due to injury.  Andy has nothing to be ashamed of though because he never stopped fighting, just that on the day his opponent was the slightly better player..

Let us be honest. Andy cannot play on clay against a good clay court man.

It was Davis Cup in Rome all over again. Better tactics would have helped but the practice on clay should help a bit for Bordeaux next up. Take the positives?

IThe DC was in Naples, but yes, Fognini tormented Andy mercilessly from start to finish.

Meanwhile I do hope that Andy hasn't done anything of concern to his back and that he does play in Bordeaux where the field will be a bit stronger than it was in Aix because he needs some more tough competition before RG.

I did notice that he was clutching his back and I share your concern. Sorry that I had the venue wrong for that Davis Cup match. I think we realised then how difficult it was for Andy to play on clay. Not sure that he needs better opposition, more that he needs a find a way to adapt his game to do better on the surface. For that it is more time adapting his current movement and shot skills.

MA - Has it been so difficult though because Andy beat Nadal in the final of Madrid in 2015 and again in the semi-finals there the following year.  In addition he's a four-time semi-finalist at RG as well as reaching the final in 2016, so not too bad for a surface he isn't good on!

After this defeat Andy is undecided about playing at RG -

“I’d still like to play but we did agree that we’d talk and make a decision as a team after Rome.

“That is what I wanted, to see how my game felt, how I was playing and physically how I was doing in some of the longer matches before making a definitive call on it. We’ll have those discussions in the next few days.”
