Andy at Indian Wells

Quote

The tournament runs from 6th - 17th March.  It will be Andy's 16th appearance here.  His best results came in 2009 when he defeated Roger Federer in the semi-finals in three sets, then lost to Rafael Nadal 6-1, 6-2 in the final, unusually strong winds causing Andy problems.  Last year Andy reached round 3 after defeating Tomas Martin Etcheverry in R1 and Radu Albot in R2, but was then beaten 7-6(8-6), 6-2 by Jack Draper.  In fact the only British man to have won the title in the tournament's 37 year history was Cameron Norrie in 2021.

This year's ATP player field is headed by Novak Djokovic, playing in his first tournament since his semi-final exit at the Australian Open.  The defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is the No. 2 seed.

The draw appears to have been made with Andy playing a Qualifier and if he gets through that would play Andrey Rublev in round 2.   Tough draw for him & he's had a relatively poor record here in the past - I believe he's down to play the Phoenix challenger in between this & Miami.

Thanks Pedantic.  I did think that leaving the draw until tomorrow probably wasn't right, but took the day and time from the tournie website anyway.

Yes, Andy's entered the Arizona Tennis Classic in Phoenix starting on the 12th.

How about that. A good win. He played with almost a smile on his face and won quite easily. I wondered though if Kim would approve of those awful shorts that looked unwashed from tidying the shed.

I hope he starts with same attitude against Rublev and does not get too uptight over the result if, as expected, it proves to be negative. Nice if he could just compete and enjoy playing someone better than Goffin. All good for his improvement from a rather 'dark period'.

He plays next on Friday I think but earlier than last night?
