Up next for Andy is another French player, 28 year old World No. 187 Laurent Lokoli (career high 167 in Feb. 2023) who defeated World No. 60 Albert Ramos-Vinolas 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in round 1.

Lokoli plays mainly on the Challenger and ITF circuits, but while Monfils was somewhat lacking in match practice, Lokoli is not, having competed regularly since the Australian Open for which he qualified then lost in five in R1 to Michael Mmoh.  His last tournament was the Barletta Challenger (clay) at the beginning of April where he reached the quarter-finals.  He then failed to qualify for Madrid and gained entry to this tournament as an alternate.

Lokoli's minor claim to fame came at the 2017 French Open when he refused to shake hands with his R1 opponent Martin Klizan at the net after accusing him of faking injury in the fifth set to gain advantage, something which cost him his coach plus he hasn't received any main draw or qualifying wild cards for ATP events held in France since the incident.

Unfortunately the Tommy Paul match is still in the first set, with Paul leading 4-1 atm.

Interestingly though, the No. 2 and 3 seeds, Nakashima and Mannarino, have been knocked out.

Well, so far so good, although Lokoli hasn't had much trouble holding serve. But Andy's own serve is looking pretty solid, which I feel is always crucial for him early on in a match.
