Judy Murray

Quote

Have you read it yet Aileen?  It really might change your view of her.  I think she's massively misrepresented.  When I was in the same room as her, by co-incidence, she made a point of saying a low-key hello to people.  And she comes across very well in talks.
I see that ILA has but I haven't and don't intend to either mainly because I gave up reading books a long time ago.  Somebody did give me a copy of Andy's autobiography "Hitting Back" several years ago but I only read parts of it.  It was pretty immature stuff anyway, the best bits being inputs from Judy and Jamie.

Is there any further news about the Academy??
And over three years later, the saga is still rumbling on!  I think the main problem now is that, even although permission was agreed in principle, Judy decided to extend the site to include a Sir Andy Murray Museum plus a few other things.  Maybe if she just stuck to the academy she might get on better.

So finally after six years ,,,,

"Judy Murray has won a battle to build a tennis and golf centre in her son Sir Andy’s home town after the controversial plans were approved by the Scottish government.

The initiative will see a museum built in honour of Sir Andy Murray, the double Wimbledon winner and Olympic gold medallist, on green belt land between Dunblane and Bridge of Allan, as well as a number of facilities and sporting grounds."

That's good new to hear, was always wondering why there was no Andy Murray Academy.

^ Reaction locally is that to destroy this area with luxury houses hotel and a golf course to fund a tennis academy also on the site is not acceptable. There were a large number of people who were against this proposal whose expections of the Planning Process have been disappointed.  As a visitor here for Christmas and a follower of planning disasters caused by commercial greed mainly I tend to agree with them. All of you need to ask yourselves some questions before supporting this.
What point is it having plans to control development in what is a Green Belt unless they are followed?
A tennis academy could be anywhere but in the countryside is perhaps a wrong choice as who is it for?
What is the financial gain for the Govrnment in this?

I may be cynical on planning being totally corrupt in most of England as it is determined a lot by financial self interest but I had hoped that the Scottish Government had learnt something after the Trump Golf courses!

MA - I never did think that this particular plan was a good idea - particularly the building of luxury homes on the site - something you'll find out if you read my earlier posts.  Green Belts are just that and should be kept that way.  Judy had the chance of opening a tennis academy in Cramond, an upmarket suburb of Edinburgh, some years ago, using existing facilities, but turned it down because she didn't think it was accessible enough!  Then next thing we know she's teamed up with Colin Montgomerie and come up with this idea.  What her sons feel about it I wouldn't know, although both were allegedly in favour of it initially.

^ I am glad that you feel like me about this particular venture.

I don't live in Scotland but we have the North Yorkshire Moors and many green belt areas, I can't imagine a tennis academy of the sort Judy wants here in rural Yorkshire.  However I do agree that this is not the right thing with a hotel and up-market houses etc.  Maybe the permission will be revoked?
Aileen - I think Andy and Jamie will approve of it, this is their mother's idea, they wouldn't want to go against her - would they?

Aileen, I remember when we used to talk about it.

"Tennis legend Billie Jean King insists the best legacy for Sir Andy Murray would be for the controversial tennis centre proposed at Park of Keir to be built."   https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/local-news/tennis-legend-bille-jean-king-33204274

While plans for this were finally approved by the Scottish Govt in December 2021 after complaints by local residents that the venue would be unsuitable were turned down, nothing has been heard about it since, apart from the fact that complaints about the waste of valuable green belt land still seem to be ongoing, possibly on social media.

I do agree though that it would be a fitting tribute if a tennis academy, preferably minus the golf course and luxury housing, were built somewhere in central Scotland, certainly much better than a statue at Wimbledon, something I don't think Andy wants anyway.

Well I hope there will be a statue at Wimbledon, he deserves it and has earned it. Waiting for another Brit to win two Slams at Wimbledon then they would defiantly put one up. There should have been a tennis court up and running by now, it does happen in other countries.

The LTA have pledged £5m towards the cost of the tennis centre subject to the centre receiving all the necessary planning approvals from the local authority later this year.

That’s good news.  A much better legacy than a statue at Wimbledon, providing it gets the go ahead.

Unfortunately the plans for a tennis centre near Dunblane have been scrapped over planning issues and rising costs.

Maybe they should not have included the building of houses, don't know if that would have made a difference though.

I don't think that helped, but the main issue seems to be the fact that the whole thing was being built on green belt land.
